Ceramic braces cost more than metal for the same treatment. You’re paying for how they look, not for how they work.

Right for me?

When I’d recommend
fixed over aligners

I say on the aligner page that aligners are the right answer for most adults asking the question. Here’s when they aren’t.

When the movements are large or complex. Fixed braces move teeth bodily and control the root position in a way aligners do it less predictably. If your case needs that, fixed will give you a better result in less time.

When you know you won’t wear them. Aligners work twenty-two hours a day or they don’t work. Some people know themselves well enough to know that’s not going to happen. That’s not a character flaw — it’s useful self-knowledge, and it points at fixed braces.

When the bite needs real work. Some corrections are simply better handled by something attached to the teeth.

If your case is beyond what I should be doing, I’ll refer you to a specialist orthodontist rather than take it on.

The most common question

Do they stain?

The most common question, and the answer is more precise than most sites give you.

The brackets don’t stain. Modern ceramic brackets are glass-like and hold their colour for the whole treatment.

The elastic ties can. The small elastic rings holding the wire into each bracket will pick up colour from curry, red wine, coffee and smoking. They’re changed at every adjustment appointment, so at worst you’re looking at a few weeks of slightly tea-coloured ties before they’re swapped for fresh ones.

If it bothers you, the fix is either to avoid the obvious culprits for the first week after each adjustment, or to have the ties changed more often.

How it works

From first call to retainers

  1. Free 15-minute call

I’ll tell you whether fixed is likely to be the right route.

  2. Assessment

Photographs, scan, X-rays. A realistic plan and timeline.

  3. Fitting

Brackets bonded to the teeth, wire placed. About an hour and a half.

  4. Adjustments

Every six to eight weeks. Short appointments.

  5. Removal

    Brackets off, teeth polished.

  6. Retainers

Same as aligners — see below.

Worth knowing

Living with them

The first week is the awkward one. Your teeth will feel tender for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment, and your lips and cheeks need time to get used to the brackets. Wax helps. It settles.

Cleaning takes longer. Interdental brushes stop being optional. This is the honest cost of fixed treatment and it’s worth knowing before you start.

Hard and sticky food is out for the duration — not because the brackets are fragile, but because a broken bracket means an extra appointment and a delay.

Aftercare

Retainers, indefinitely

Same rule as any other straightening. Teeth move for life; retainers are how you keep the result. Included at the end, worn nightly, indefinitely.

The aligner page has the fuller explanation, and it applies identically here.
